Back in 1997, the world watched as Elton John sang and played the piano at the unexpected funeral of the beloved Princess Diana. He had transformed the words in one of his most hauntingly beautiful tunes, “Candle in the Wind”, to specifically tailor to the loss of Princess Diana. Through his words, Elton John helped England, as well as the rest of the word, heal over such a sad and early ending to the princess’ life.
The words of this beautiful memorial song can be altered to behold the references and name of the person you wish to memorialize. When you deal with the loss of a loved one, consider how the final line of lyrics applies to the memories you will hold for a lifetime, “Your candle burned out long before your legend ever will.”
Below is the lyrics to the original version of Candle in the Wind to adapt to your own beautiful memorial music. Included is a video of Elton John singing his special version at Princess Diana’s funeral.
“Goodbye England’s rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your nameAnd it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candles burned out long before
Your legend ever willLoveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we’ll always carry
For our nation’s golden child
Even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you’ve brought us through the years”

Hi,
We don’t believe so. People play music at weddings without needing a license, so we don’t see why it would be different for funerals. Plus, what policeman would want to make a scene out of arresting you when you’re going through funeral?
